I'm sure you wonder at times. Just what does all this Teen Life subscriptions fees do beside find resources for the site? Well, a lot actually. In another email I'll probably do a full list.

Part of what is done is the support of missionaries. We have a team in China that I just returned from visiting. And you'll be glad to know that no Teen Life money is used for travel, food, etc. 100% of the gifts provided through Teen Life goes directly to the mission work.

I (Paul) just returned from visiting some of our China team. What a GREAT encouragement. There is much more openness to the Lord in China than you would imagine. There is still risk in many places, but the more "modern" areas have a real openness. Many of our team are not having to meet in secret and a few are able to get licensed and have open assemblies.

The time was spent in worship, prayer and equipping. I got to see the real "behind the scenes" side of their cities and the work they are doing.

The Lord has blessed them and many are coming to Him. Please continue to pray for our team in China!!

We thank God for you each day and the work you do. Reaching teens is challenging and rewarding. Keep preaching the word!!!

Youth Ministry Teaching Tips

Never teach a half-prepared lesson. It's not fair to the teens, God or yourself to go into a teaching situation unprepared. Some people are really good at pulling a thought out of their heads and making a great lesson out of it. However, most are not and should not try to be. That doesn't mean you are not a good teacher it simply means you have to prepare more. We've all seen really creative people come up with great lessons and great illustrations. However, they may not be the best presenters. We've seen those who are great presenters but are not very creative at coming up with lesson ideas. Bottom line, let's do the very best we can with the teaching gifts God has given us.

Verse on preparation: "Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever." Daniel 12:3

Ask God to give you the tools you need to become a great teacher. Ask Him for patience and the understanding of what you study.

What are you doing each day to prepare your next lesson?

Do you wait until Saturday night to prepare?

Read over your lesson for next Sunday on Monday. You will be surprised at how many ideas you will come up with during the week.

Bonus:

Ask a person in their 70's or 80's to come in and talk to your teens. Encourage them to tell what they had to struggle with as a teen. Encourage your class to ask questions about the peer pressures they faced 40 or 50 years ago. Be creative and make this a great event.

Tragedy in Our Youth Group (Oct 19, 2007 at 3:31 AM) - This morning between 3:30 and 4:00am the phones of our church members began ringing off the hooks. Not long after that, my phone rang and it was one of our high school coaches telling me that the mother of one of our sophomore boys was killed in a house fire.

Quiet Time- "Stand" (Oct 12, 2007 at 1:01 PM) - During the season premier of "Survivor-China" each of the game contestants were taken to a Buddhist Temple to participate in a cultural ceremony to welcome them to China. Before the ceremony they were assured that this was not a worship service and it wasn't intended to conflict with anyone's religious beliefs. However, once inside the temple they were surrounded by statues of Buddha and parts of the ceremony required bowing down in front of this Chinese god as a way to show respect. When I was in the sixth grade I started a new school. I sat across the isle from a guy who was about twice my size. He was a little over six feet tall and had the biggest arms I had ever seen. He was intimidating just to look at. You would think that at any time he could chew you up and spit you out. As the weeks went by we became close friends. I soon learned that not only did he have a big body but he had an even larger heart. All the way through jr. and sr. high school we were the best of friends. If I was not at his house, he was at mine. One thing I soon learned about this friendship was that it was not just a surface type friendship. It was the kind of friendship that if I needed help at the spur of the moment, he was there. There were times when I wanted us to do something mischievous or get into something that I shouldn't and he would stop me. There were times when I would say something about someone and he would correct me. I soon learned that only a true friend would try to make me a better person.

Proverbs 28:23 says, "Those who correct others will later be liked more than those who give false praise."

1. How do your friends help you in your walk with God?

2. How do you help your friends with their walk with God?

3. How do you determine whether a person is a good friend?

4. How do you choose your friends?

Proverbs 13:20 "Spend time with the wise and you will become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer."

Proverbs 14:7 "Stay away from fools because they can't teach you anything."

I Corinthians 15:33 "Do not be fooled: Bad friends will ruin good habits."

John 14:18 "I will not leave you alone like orphans; I will come back for you."

John 15:12-14 "This is my command: Love each other as I have loved you. The greatest love a person can show is to die for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you."

Today pray that God will give you the strength and wisdom to choose the right friends. Pray that He will put people in your life that will help you get to heaven and also someone you can help get to heaven.

Picking a Youth Retreat Location

Here are 10 ways to choose a retreat center...

1. Settle on a Purpose. Your purpose will decide what type of facility will work best. A youth group wanting a fun weekend together may put a high priority on recreational facilities. Perhaps you want to work in some sightseeing into the weekend, then you might want to select an area that is close to the attractions you would like to visit.

2. Length of Stay. Consider the advantages of a second night at a facility to provide more time for group interaction. Veteran retreat planners have discovered that the second night goes a long way in creating a valuable community experience. Factor in travel time as well. You may be planning a three-day retreat, but if it takes a day to get there then you really have only one day to work with.

3. Reserve Early. The best dates and nicest facilities get booked first. Consider reserving a facility six months to a year before you want to have a retreat. If you are pleased with the facility and service, you might want to make your reservation for the following year before your retreat is over.

4. Decide on a Price Range. It is wise to go with what the majority of your group is willing to spend. Consider offering financial assistance to those needing help. Or you can charge your group a little less than the actual cost and ask several people who can afford it to help make up the difference.

5. Get Organized. Before you call a facility, do your planning. Decide what type of accommodations you want (motel, dorms or cabins), what type of meal service, quality of menu--tuna surprise or Chicken Kiev; how large your group will be, what kind of meeting space you'll need, when you plan to arrive and depart, and if you mind sharing a facility with other groups.

6. Have a "Plan B". Have several options on dates that would work for your group. Locking yourself in to a specific date without options will set you up for disappointment if the center is not available at that particular time. Confirm dates for a facility before you confirm dates with a speaker!

7. Compare. When comparing prices between retreat facilities, make sure you ask what is and is not included in the basic fee, such as coffee breaks, audio/visual equipment and recreational equipment. Talk to other groups and find out where they have received the best service. Make a visit to a potential site. Talking in person with a representative at the facility and seeing the buildings and grounds will answer a lot of questions. When you compare facilities, don't let cost be the primary factor--ask yourself which facility and staff will help your group best achieve its retreat program goals.

8. Get it in Writing. You will want to have a written contract signed by your group representative and by the retreat facility's representative describing the agreement between the group and the conference center [camp]. Usually a nonrefundable deposit (10-15% of the minimum fee) will be required. Be sure that the minimum number of participants and the corresponding minimum fee are reasonably attainable. You may be required to make up the difference if you miss your minimum. Ask if there are additional cancellation charges.

9. Evaluate. Check out the staff's attitude toward service and hospitality as well as their philosophy. Ask others who have been there. Will a host be available to answer your questions and take care of needs during the retreat?

10. Do Your Homework. Know what you and your group want and ask lots of questions. Pre-retreat communication pays off. Keep notes and names of those you talked with for all your phone conversations, and make sure all agreements and arrangements are made in writing. Frequent and detailed pre-retreat communication will improve your chances of getting the level of service that is so important in making your retreat experience a positive one.

Creative Emails for Youth Ministry!

Here are three ways to use email creatively...

1. Half a message. Who can't send an entire message? Try sending only half the message. In order for the full message to be received have group members respond with a favorite verse or the name of a friend they are inviting to church. End your half message with a teaser that will make them want to respond.

2. Prayer Tree. Send an email to one teen with your name at the top and your prayer requests. The person who receives it is to add their name under yours with their requests. They in turn send it to another youth group member who does the same. When the last person with email receives the list they add their name then return it to you. Then you can print it out for meetings or send it to the entire group as a mass email.

3. Guess Who. Have your group members turn in a description of themselves to you. Once a week send one out to the group without the person's name. Offer a prize for those who get it rightlike getting to sit next to you during church services!

Let God's praises ring through your group.

Praise God through singing and sharing. Lift Him up with words of adoration and thanksgiving.

Give Him the glory and honor for every blessing.

If we're breathing, we should be praising (Psalm 150:6).

During one of your class or devotional times this week ask your group to share...

How the Lord has blessed them.
Specific ways they have seen the Lord work.
How they have seen the Lord's glory.
Things they want to thank the Lord for.

When we give God "the fruit of our lips" it also give us the chance to say out loud what we have felt inside our hearts.

9. Propriety. "Be holy for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16).

Holiness should be a mark of our ministry.

Every word and action is measured against the standard of holiness.

Holiness should determine what the teens wear, where they go, what movies they watch in the hotel room after the day's events, etc.

Some youth groups resemble the world with only the name of Christ attached to them. Fortunately, ost youth leaders are seeking only to lead teens into a deeper walk with Christ.

A standard of propriety will produce a walk in Christ, not just a claim of Christ (1 John 2:6).

It's an internal flame that cannot be extinguished, instead it must be released. Passion longs for all that God will give. It hungers for all that God can fill. It overflows with unquenchable emotion. When our ministries contain passion no one will remain untouched by God's desire.

They may refuse it. But it won't be for a lack of feeling it.

Successful Youth Ministry - Part 7

P's of a Successful Youth Ministry. Each week for 10 weeks we'll cover another "P".

7. Preach. "Preach the word in all seasons" (2 Timothy 4:2).

Sometimes you need to teach and sometimes we need to preach. We need to be able to lay it on the line without a parable, or an object lesson, or a clever story.

There are times when we want the group to discover the lesson for themselves and times when we need to make it painfully clear so no one can walk away without understanding.

Preaching is a traditional term that we often leave for the guy who stands behind the pulpit. Dust it off and put it into practice. You don't have to tell the teens you're preaching - just do it when it's necessary.

Here are a few tips to help your "preaching"...

1. Preach it Hard. When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost he told the people that they crucified the Messiah. He didn't soft-sell it or go gentle on them.

2. Preach it Clear. Peter's words were not in question. The crowd did not have to call a meeting to decode the message.

3. Preach it Pain. The crowd did not respond because Peter asked them to. They responded because they knew something had to be done. They felt a pain. They were "prick in their hearts and asked Peter and the other apostles, 'What should we do?'"

As school is about to begin, now might be the right time to preach a strong lesson about the upcoming year.

6. Power. "For the kingdom is not of talk, but of power" (1 Corinthians 4:20).

Do we talk more about what we are going to do, or about what God is going to do?

Whatever we choose to do will be limited. Whatever God chooses to do will be unlimited.

When God's power is present in the ministry there's no need for big talk because we have an Almighty God. The power that split the Red Sea, turned water into wine, and raised the dead is available to us today, so let's talk soft and carry a big God.

Youth Ministry Perfection

5. Perfection. "Therefore, be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). When this verse is read I always hear the disclaimer, "Jesus was using a hyperbole in this verse. We can't expect to be perfect." Both of those statements may be true, but that shouldn't stop us from making an attempt at perfection.

If we never put perfection on the list, we will never make it. Strive for excellence above and beyond the average ministry.

Excellence does not necessarily mean...

The biggest youth group.
The coolest gadgets.
The most popular church.
The most trips taken in a year.
A church van that actually runs.

We're talking about excellence as God measures...

I Corinthians 12:13 "...and now I will show you the most excellent way."

1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

3. Plan. "For which of you before he builds a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it?" (Luke 14:28). You've heard it before... a goal without a plan is nothing more than a wish. God had a plan with Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joshua and on and on and on. The Father honors a plan that honors Him. A plan proves that we feel the event is worth the effort, while the lack of a plan can show apathy or laziness.

Train volunteers
Develop curriculum
Contact the youth each month
Praise the parents
Build a core team
Strengthen relationships

2. Prayer. "Worry about nothing, pray about everything" (Philippians 4:6). Do we really pray about everything? Do we spend as much time in prayer over a two-hour service project as we do a three-day retreat? As we pray we are asking God to do what He wouldn't have done had we not asked. Don't we want that in every area of our ministry? Let's rub some holes in our jeans from our knees hitting the floor.

P's of a Successful Youth Ministry. This week we begin a new MAXimizer series. Each week for 10 weeks we'll cover another "P".

1. Purpose. "Whatever you do in word or deed do all to the glory of God" (Colossians 3:17). Regardless of who you are trying to reach or the format type you adopt, everything should point directly back to God. There should be a biblical purpose behind each activity whether it's labeled social or spiritual.

How much of your programming is to fill time and how much to fill hearts with God?
Can you write down the specific purpose of each activity or event and show how it relates to teaching the teens about a characteristic of God? Or teach a certain biblical principle?

Those questions can be tough. It's so easy to fill a calendar, but to fill it with purpose is harder. As youth workers we can't guarantee that a teen will "get it." However, it's import that "it" is there to get.

I'm a week late with the newsletter because I just got back from visiting some mission works in Russia and Turkey. The work in Russia uses a different approach than in the United States. The work in Turkey is different than Russia.

The missionaries understand the culture and the people. They understand Paul's concept of... "To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some." 1 Cor. 9:22.

Too often we try to adopt a specific evangelistic format and make it fit. Instead think about each person as an individual. See the "Younique" aspects.

Each person is different. They have different...

1. Backgrounds.

2. Dreams.

3. Needs.

You can only "become all things to all men" when people are viewed individually.

Jesus did heal the lame of blindness. He met the specific need.

Encourage your group to see each person as YOUnique.

"We're on a mission from God" The Blues Brothers.

The sad thing is that the Blues Brothers were more active in their reckless pursuit in the name of God, than many true believers are.

We are on a MISSION! We have our orders and need to carry them out...

1. We are told to go and make disciples in all the world (Matt. 28:19-20).

2. We are to be armed and ready for the battle in spiritual realms (Eph. 6:10-18).

3. We are to fight the good fight (1 Tim 6:12).

4. We are to fight against strongholds and demolish them (2 Cor. 10:3-5).

5. We are to share Christ everywhere daily (Acts 5:42).

Have your peer army write out their mission this week. Help them focus on being active for God.

The "R" stands for...

Report

"The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught." Mark 6:30

Jesus didn't just allow the disciples to go and teach without giving feedback. They returned and gave up the details.

They shared...

1. What was done. Where they went. What happened. Encourage your teens to share when and where they shared the gospel. Give them time to tell the whole story. In our fast paced world we want the Cliff Notes so we can move on. Don't do it. Set aside a time for teens to get to take their time with their report.

2. What was taught. Get deeper than, "And then I told him about Jesus." Ask for the fine points. Ask about the verses shared and what questions were asked.

When teens give a report...

1. They gain godly confidence. Even if the attempt to share didn't go well, sharing the story lets them see that they can try again. It helps to tell the experience with supporting peers.

2. It helps others in the army. They hear of what went right and can learn from it. They hear about what went wrong and can offer suggestions or love.

3. A team is formed. Reporting let's everyone see that "we are in this together." Sharing the good news as a soloists can feel (and be) lonely. Regular reporting with build cohesiveness and strength in the group.

In Luke 9:1-6, Jesus send his followers out to the towns and villages to teach the gospel and to heal. It might have been easy for the disciples to hang out with Jesus and be adored by the crowds, but they had work to do on their own.

Armed and equipped it's time to send your evangelistic teens out. It's time to advance on the relationships they listed last week.

Send them out...

1. Spend time in prayer. Pray for each teen and each person they plan to approach in the name of Jesus. Ask God for opportunities to share.

2. Review the gospel and what the students will be sharing.

3. Depend on God. Jesus told his students to take nothing with them. Encourage your teens not to get wrapped up in tools or tricks. Let the simple message of Jesus and the influence of the Holy Spirit make the difference.

Challenge your group to share the good news this week.

Youth Ministry - P.E.E.R. A.R.M.Y.

The first "R" stands for...

Relationship.

The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). John 1:41

While we are to share Jesus with everyone, sometimes its easiest to start with friends and family. A relationship helps because you have a starting point.

1. Relationships are build on trust. A person who trusts you will be more open to the gospel than a complete stranger.

2. Relationships provide opportunity. Being around someone a lot means it's not a one time shot. You can share the Lord when the door appears open.

3. Relationships possess key experiences. Teens know their friends' hurts, wants and dreams. Jesus often approached people through their deepest need. The woman at the well in John 4 is an example. Her loneliness was Jesus' point of connection.

Encourage your group to think about their exiting relationships. Have them list the people in their lives they can share the good news with. Have them write down the problem or need Jesus could enter their lives through.

The second "E" stands for...

Evangelism.

"However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given methe task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace." Acts 20:24

It's at this stage that teens begin to get intimidated. They don't feel that they have know enough, do enough, or are pure enough to share the good news of Jesus.

Evangelism is not about perfection, but acceptance.

First, they have to accept that it is their responsibility to share Jesus. Without their willingness to tell others about Jesus their friends will be lost.

Second, they have to accept the fact that none of us know everything and that sharing Jesus is not difficult (it's the doctrinal differences that usually cause the problem.

Here is the simple, uncomplicated gospel message...

"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures," I Cor. 15:3-4

That's what we arm students with. The straightforward good news of Jesus.

Next week, we'll look at "R."

Youth Ministry : Family Meetings

Feel free to copy, paste and send to the parents of your youth group...

1. Choose A Convenient Time.

Finding a time when the entire family can be together may take a combination of sacrifice and commitment. Even thirteen-year-olds seem to have a schedule that keeps them busy every hour of the day.

Ask each family member to turn in a schedule of their average week. Look it over and pinpoint the times when a majority of the household does not have conflicting events and plan to meet during one of those times.

2. Set A Maximum Meeting Length.

Make the meetings short and precise. If discussion carries the meeting over the prescribed time that's fine, but covering a list of unimportant material will only make further meetings dreaded.

Cover everything that touches each family member early in the meeting. If your allotted time is one hour, save anything that would not specifically include the children until last and let them leave after the set time.

3. Cover The Meeting With Prayer.

Philippians 4:6 says, "Worry about nothing, pray about everything." Begin and close every time together by talking to the Father. Take prayer requests and mention each individual during the prayer time.

Rely on spontaneous prayer during the meeting. If a family member mentions a problem or shares a need, stop and pray.

It was one of those nights; you just wanted to chill and watch TV or play your video games. You might even want to spend time loading your ipod with your favorite tunes. Whatever the case, you didn't get your homework done and time is running out before the next semester's grades find there way to your parents. You get to school a little earlier the next day and someone lets you copy their homework. Man, you are relieved. When you hand your work in, your teacher says, "This is great, did you do this by yourself?" What do you do now? How do you answer that question and still be pleasing to God?

1. Have you ever been in a situation similar to the one above?

2. What did you do?

3. What should you have done?

4. What was the final outcome between you and God?

Proverbs 12:22 says, "The Lord hates those who tell lies but is pleased with those who keep their promises."

Youth Ministry Easter - Part 3

We hope you had a GREAT Easter!

Often we work hard getting ready. Making sure we have the perfect lesson. Trying to guarantee a good impression.

But now the REAL work begins. It's time to follow-up with the guests.

Take the time this week to do one of the following...

1. Call. Make a brief phone call to guests to thank them for attending and to see if they have any questions. (Be careful with this one because parents can be sensitive about an unknown religious person calling their child.)

2. Card. Send a thank you note. Nothing more. You do not have to use any heavy "conversion" techniques. Just an honest thank you is fine.

More important than what you do is what your group does. They need to be making the phone calls. They need to be sending cards. They need to be emailing, chatting and texting. They need to make the next invitation.

There are those teens who need an "adult figure" in their life, but MOST need peer influences. Your role as youth leader is not to do the teens' work for them, but to train them. Starting next week we will begin a series called P.E.E.R. A.R.M.Y. Hopefully, these brief lessons will help you turn your teens into an evangelistic force.

Youth Ministry Quiet Time

Feel free to send the following to your group for use in their quiet time...

Think of a time in your past when someone forgave you of something. Maybe it was something small or maybe you were shown forgiveness on a large scale. As a seminary student I once cheated on an internet testI know, cheating is bad; but cheating in seminary has to be an all time low! Even worse, I cheated on a test given by my favorite professor- a man I respected and considered my mentor.

I didn't sleep much that night because I felt so guilty. Have you ever been in that situation before? The next morning the first thing I did was go to him and tell him what I had done. Right in front of him and a few other students I broke down and started to cry in my shame. I deserved to be accused and have my grade changed to a zero. Instead, he grabbed me and hugged me and said, "I respect your honesty and I feel a close bond with you that I know will last through our lives." Then he told me that he forgave me and would never hold what I did against me. In fact, he didn't even change my grade!

None of us deserve forgiveness when we do something wrong, but fortunately forgiveness is about getting what we don't deserve. God calls that grace! As a Christian you have been shown the most amazing grace ever: forgiveness from all your sins! David had a pretty amazing understanding of God's forgiveness. Read Psalm 51:1-12 and underline or write down the words you would equate with forgiveness.

Memory Verse this week: Psalm 130:3-4

"If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O LORD, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are to be feared." (NIV)

The Message says it this way: "If you God, kept records on wrongdoings, who would stand a chance? As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit, and that's why you're worshiped."

In your prayer time today thank God for His forgiveness and remember that is continual. God doesn't keep score of our sins, but He willingly forgives us. You can pray something like this: Jesus, thank you for my freedom from the bondage of sin! Continue to open my spiritual eyes to see you more clearly. You bore my sins- I'll bear your Majestic Name!

Last week we mentioned having a pre-Easter event to help teens understand what it's about and what your church will be like on that day.

This week they need to be invitation crazy.

1. Call or email your entire group daily to remind them to invite.

2. Create a special invitation card if you haven't already.

3. Add an "about Easter" page to your website for your teens to send friends to.

4. Post an Easter message on your blog. (Zone members if you don't have a blog, see the updates below for the link to the video series for blog setup and use.)

5. Set up an Easter message on your voice mail and have the teens give the number to their friends.

6. Whether you like it or not, many of your teens have MySPace and FaceBook accounts. Get them to post information about Easter on there.

Those are just a few ways to get the word out this week about the most important message on the planet...

1. Legalism. Galatians 4:15

What happened to the Galatians joy?

Why did their servant attitude disappear? (Legalism always makes you want to do the least - to do only what is required. Grace, on the other hand, takes the law out of the way and lets us serve without restriction.)

2. Sin. Romans 3:23

How does sin rob us of our joy? (Guilt, bitterness, insecurity.)

Have a time of prayer in class where teens can ask God silently for forgiveness of specific sins.

JOY HEALERS:

An awesome aspect about God is that He wants us to have joy.

1. The Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17

Because joy is a fruit of the Spirit, it only makes since that he wants us to be filled with joy.

How does the Holy Spirit put joy in our lives?

Youth Ministry Easter

Many of today's youth did not grow up with an Easter tradition beside hunting for eggs. That means that Easter works great for adults, but not so great for youth ministry.

Unchurched teens don't do too well at sunrise services. They don't understand the the emblems or symbols or resurrection sermon.

So what can we do to reach teens at Easter?

One option would be to host a "Night of the Living Dead!" If that sounds too over the top, "What's a Bunny Got to Do with Easter?" Have the event prior to Easter and share the basics of the faith. Share what they will see at your church and the meaning behind it. Sing some of the same songs that will be sung at the Easter service and explain what they mean.

Several of things will happen...

1. Teens will get to hear and understand the good news of Jesus. Some may accept him at the event.

2. Those who decide to come to a service will actually know and understand what is going on.

3. Many of your teens are wondering what certain aspects of service are about and this will help them as well.

1. Learn To Listen Attentively.

It has often been said that God gave us one mouth and two ears so we could listen twice as much as we talk. The Lord puts it like this, “Be slow to speak and quick to listen.”

Before you say, "Now you listen to me, young lady," hear your teen's side of the story. Let him or her have a complete say so you can speak clearly and respond to the details appropriately.

2. Be Consistent.

Consistency in communication patterns will help open the gate to your teen's heart. If we scream one time, and are pleasant the next, they won't know what to expect. That type of temperament will drive a teen to silence.

If you struggle with consistency, chart your communication pattern. On a sheet of graph paper place the #1 on a low line and the #10 on a high line. "1" = calm. "10" = volcanic. Keep a record for three months then evaluate and make any needed corrections.

3. Remove Distractions.

Close the book, turn off the television, fold up the newspaper and take care of any other distraction so you can give full attention to your teen. When we refuse to focus on the conversation our children perceive us as uninterested. Once we establish that thought in their minds it will be difficult to change the attitude.

Make it obvious that you want to listen. Say, "Hold on a minute honey. Let me turn off the radio, I don't want to miss a word."

Transforming the Teen World View Through Discipleship Part 4

Part One, Part Two, Part Three

Last week we discussed how once the heart changes, values change. This week we look at behavior changes.

Think about the disciples. Think about their before and after pictures.

Because of the heart change that took place their actions changed. Peter changed from speaking without thinking to speaking under the influence of the Spirit. John changes from a "son of thunder" to "the apostle of love."

Too often we want or demand change without a change of heart. We want behavior to change, but forget the soul.

Jesus makes it clear "Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' " Mark 7:15

If we want behavior to change, it comes from the inside out.

The most powerful change that can take place is the through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that he would not leave us alone, but would send a helper. Romans 8 talks about the Spirit being IN us. That's how real change takes place.

We also give the Spirit room to work through the spiritual disciplines. By encouraging bible study, fasting, prayer, etc. We provide opportunity for growth and change.

Youth Ministry : Teen Commitment

1. Commitment Contracts. We are so afraid people might walk away from our ministry that few of us are willing to demand commitment. We act like Jesus formed the "Let's just hang out together" club. He didn't. He formed the "I gave my life for you" clubbetter known as the church.

You may want to provide varying levels of commitment for your group. Membership demands certain commitments such as attendance and spiritual growth, while leadership may require commitment to leadership growth principles that are tested and evaluated.

Whatever you choose, have each individual sign it so you know they know the standard.

2. Regular Spiritual Checkups. Signing a card doesn't guarantee commitment, so take it a step farther by holding regular spiritual checkups. If your group is small you may be able to meet with one teen at a time and ask about their devotional habits, worship habits, etc.

With a larger group you may want to design a spiritual check up sheet that will allow them to evaluate themselves. I like using the "Spiritual Wheel". It's simple but effective. Have the teens grade themselves in different spiritual areas and assign a rating. "1" = poor, "10" = perfect. When they connect the dots, have them circle the high points as strengths, and the low points as weaknesses.

3. Service Projects. "Six Flags? Yeah!!!" "Football? You bet!!" "Visit old Mrs. Mathers? Is this a joke?"

Someone said, "You can tell how popular the church is by who comes Sunday morning. You can tell how popular the preacher is by who comes Sunday night. You can tell how popular Jesus is by who comes to the prayer meeting." In our case, you can tell by who comes to the service project. These activities keep kids committed by allowing them to live Jesus, not just talk about Him.

Part One, Part Two.

Last week we discussed how we plant the seeds and God changes lives. Once the heart changes, values change.

Values = standards and principles

Often we want teens to "act" differently. But that's hard if it's not coming from the inside out. Without God being at the core, values and principles become skewed.

What are some of the values worldly teens?

Acceptance
Immorality
Selfishness
Anti-authority
Distrust of adults
High trust in friends
Secrecy

Think about someone with that set of values. What type of actions will they produce?

What are some of the values godly teens?

Love
Service
Patience
Trusting God
Faith
Honesty

Think about someone with that set of values. What type of actions will they produce?

Luke 6:45 - The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

That passage is not surprising is it? Haven't you heard someone say, "I just don't understand why he acts that way"? It's because there is a value that is not being met.

Godly values can be created intentionally through discipleship. Worldly values are often created intentionally or through neglect.

Next week, we'll look at desired behavior and some ways to get there.

And to a degree this is not unhealthy. Young people need to develop their own convictions about life. And part of the process may involve challenging the values and convictions they have been taught.

Youth Ministry Sudden Impact

As the weeks went by we became close friends. I soon learned that not only did he have a big body but he had an even larger heart. All the way through jr. and sr. high school we were the best of friends. If I was not at his house, he was at mine. One thing I soon learned about this friendship was that it was not just a surface type friendship. It was the kind of friendship that if I needed help at the spur of the moment, he was there.

There were times when I wanted us to do something mischievous or get into something that I shouldn't and he would stop me. There were times when I would say something about someone and he would correct me. I soon learned that only a true friend would try to make me a better person.

Proverbs 28:23 says, "Those who correct others will later be liked more than those who give false praise."

1. How do your friends help you in your walk with God?

2. How do you help your friends with their walk with God?

3. How do you determine whether a person is a good friend?

4. How do you choose your friends?

Proverbs 13:20 "Spend time with the wise and you will become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer."

Proverbs 14:7 "Stay away from fools because they can't teach you anything."

I Corinthians 15:33 "Do not be fooled: Bad friends will ruin good habits."

John 14:18 "I will not leave you alone like orphans; I will come back for you."

John 15:12-14 "This is my command: Love each other as I have loved you. The greatest love a person can show is to die for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you."

Today pray that God will give you the strength and wisdom to choose the right friends. Pray that He will put people in your life that will help you get to heaven and also someone you can help get to heaven.

Transforming the Teen World View Through Discipleship Part 2

Last Monday, we ended with the question...

"How do we change our heart and the hearts of teens?"

Short answer: We Don't. God's does.

That's not a cop-out. It's just the we give ourselves WAY to much credit and put WAY too much pressure on ourselves. Youth ministers often blame themselves for the teen who falls away or won't get fully involved. Of course, we can have an impact, but if we're faithful then...

It God's job to "draw all men to myself" and to "give the increase." Our job is to "make disciples."

So how can we hold up our end of the deal?

1. BIBLE classes. Zone members have noticed that our lessons are not activity based, but Bible based. We must "teach them to obey everything Christ commanded" Matthew 28:19-20. (Zone members: Bible lessons, teaching tips, and Amazing Teaching). We're not saying there's anything wrong with activity lessons, but there are plenty out there.

2. Equipping Opportunities (Eph 4:11-13). We need to provide times and places for teens for discipleship training. Each teen will be a different disciple. Each will have a different worldview that will be shifted through God's power active through their service. We have to train teens to discover and act on their gifts.

3. Availability. At the close of the Great Commission Jesus said, "I am with you always." Not out of occupation, but out of care and concern we need to be there for the teens. Be excited about the opportunities to listen to their problems or celebrate their victories.

That's just three ways we water and plant (1 Cor. 3:6). Make a list this week of other action steps to take.

1. Establish health habits. It’s no secret that people are more productive when they eat and exercise properly. Proper diet will enhance mental capabilities and keep you focused. Getting seven or more hours of sleep each night will result in more productivity. What? There’s no way you can get that much sleep? It’s impossible to eat well when all teens want is pizza? You’re too exhausted to exercise?

Put sleep down as an “A” priority and go to bed at a reasonable hour. You don’t have to give up pizza, but you can limit yourself to a couple of pieces. And you can do light exercise during your breaks. Actually, we make time for what we want to do. Put health at the top of the list of goals if want to manage God’s time well.

2. Delegate (n. - a person authorized to act for others). What are you doing that someone else could do for you? Need to make twenty youth song books? Perhaps you have three teens who would do a good job of putting them together. Not only does delegating work take pressure off of you and allow you to use time somewhere else, it provides others an opportunity to serve and get involved in ministry.

3. Let technology work for you. If every member of the group needs to get an urgent message, use email. Keep a database updated so you can print labels instead of hand-addressing each mailing. Acquire a machine or computer program that will call all teens and parents and give them a message you recorded. Call bookstores, etc. before you ride over to see if they have what you want and discover that it will have to be special ordered.

Teaching Teens to Worship

1. Worship Creates Hunger. “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2).

When is the last time you heard a teen say, “When can I go and meet with God?” When you hear that phrase you know you’ve met a worshiper. Entering the Lord’s presence through worship creates satisfaction and hunger simultaneously.

2. Raise Your Praise. “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth!” (Psalm 47:1).

In the blank provided write the name of the last professional football event that you attended that was quiet: __________________________. Is the blank still blank? Do you know why? Because the people in the stands are worshipping what’s happening on the field (at least one group of fans). When God is active in our field of life we respond with praise.

3. Let God Find You. “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (John 4:23).

God is looking for us. He is seeking us. Will He find us? If we had a special pair of glasses that revealed true worshipers, how many people would be in the pews Sunday morning? How many would God find?

Teen Faith Development

Teen Faith Development

1. God's power. Jesus said, "No one can come to me unless the Father draws Him" (John 6:44). This is the number one tool for a teen's faith development. God draws a teen into a relationship with Him. God convicts the heart and creates the need for salvation. God grants grace and forgiveness. God's power makes all this possible.

Relying on God's power will forge true faith in a teen. Relying on our power may result in the teen's faith being in us. Paul wrote that he came "to preach the gospel - not with words of human wisdom, less the cross be emptied of it's power" (I Corinthians 1:17). Our human wisdom only weakens the message. Let God bring power to your group.

2. Daily Bible Study. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). The Bible contains the actual words of God. A teen's faith matures when he or she believes that statement and lives it.

Before turning to their friends, teach your group to turn to God first. Our sinfulness allows us to rationalize almost any wrong into a right. God's Word, however, remains true. The more an individual reads and lives the Word, the stronger their faith gets, and the more dependent on God they become. (Teen Life Slide Rules are a great tools for getting teens into the Word.)

3. A faith that works. Provide opportunities for your teens to put their faith into action. James, Jesus' brother, recorded it this way, "Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do" (James 2:18).

There exists a direct correlation between faith and works. When we have faith we work. When we work for the Lord, faith develops. You've seen it before. A teen with great faith believes God will do great things, so she saves all the money she can for the mission trip. Another teen holds weak faith and goes on the trip for fun. But as he sees God changing lives through his group, his life changes and his faith grows.

Balancing Ministry and Family

Balancing Ministry and Family Time

1. Date your spouse.

Even after you are married, you need to date your spouse. Schedule a night once or twice a month for a night out together, without the children. You and your children will benefit from making your marriage a priority. If you can't afford a baby-sitter, find another couple with whom you can trade off baby-sitting duties.

2. Wherever you are, be all there.

When you are about the Lord's work, remember it is Christ you are serving. A poor work ethic invites ridicule and diminishes credibility. On the other hand, don't dwell on ministry problems and responsibilities after you leave the office. Flip off the switch when you head for home. If you're preoccupied, you time with your family won't really count. Let your loved ones know that they are truly cherished.

3. Eat dinner together.
